Day 60 Komotini - 27.9.05

A big night on the internet last night gave us a late start on the road. The map again made it look hard to avoid the freeway but it turned out easy. The landscape was getting noticeably drier and there were fewer trees and no more olive groves. We started passing fields of cotton and watched lonely elderly pairs sitting draped in clothes to shield themselves from the sun, picking the crop.

We made slow progress in the 35 degree heat mainly because Daniel's knee was giving him trouble and were happy to revise our target for the day to Alexandropolous. Just out of town, Daniel's bike became irrational and we found he had a flat rear tyre. Incredible! Our thorn proof tube till then was, in my opinion the best piece of equipment we were carrying. But I suppose any tube can get a hole in it.

For comparrison, my bike is yet to have a flat and my tubes have not had air put in them since France some 3,000km ago. I will still never tour without them. It was a struggle to get the tyre off and then on again but we patched the tube and rode into our last Greek city.

Stats Dist 68 Km, Average 19km/hr, Max 42km/hr, Climb 475
