Day 59 Kavala - 26.9.05

Kavala was a great town and that fact, and the climb, made it hard to leave but time was advancing and so must we. We followed the signs to Xanthi and skillfully avoided the freeway taking the smaller parallel road. A pleasant inland ride with mountains to our left, yet no climbing for us. With temperatures around 35 C, Xanthi was a welcome lunch stop.

We took an even quieter road through places that were too small to call themselves villages. People waved or called out as we passed them working or sitting at kantinas on the roadside. Then in the little town of Sostis, I moved left when I shouldn't have and Daniel clipped my pannier and came crashing down. He hurt his knee, elbow and hand and broke a spoke on his front wheel which went out of round.

This happened in the driveway of a petrol station and people came to look but no one offered to help.

Out came the first aid kit and we cleaned and dressed Daniel's wounds as well as we could and I set about sorting out the front wheel. Replacing the spoke and applying tension was not enough so I did a roadside adjustment and the wheel was rideable. We took it easy into Komatini and Daniel's knee was put under ice.

Stats Dist 104 Km, Average 23km/hr, Max 50km/hr, Climb 370
