How much can a Kavala Bear?

Day 57 Asprovalta - 24.9.05

Daniel's stomach had been a bit irritated yesterday and what should have been an easy day was made increasingly difficult as he found it harder to get energy. The busy road followed the coast but we chose the old route to Kavala which followed a valley between two mountain ranges.

The villages were small and poor with lots of simple charm and when we stopped for lunch at Akrovouni, we ordered with our basic Greek and gestures. The cafe owner's children gathered round us asking questions and prodding us to see if we were real. I moved some bags from Daniel's panniers to mine and we rode on through olive groves, vineyards and then an area where slate was being mined and cut for the building industry.

We came to a small town called Stavros (the second Stavros in 2 days?) and then a sharp climb followed by a spectacular descent into Kavala as we again rejoined the Mediterranean to survey the port and castle that defended it. When we rode to the port there was a sign with a two headed eagle just like the German symbol indicating 460Km to Konstantinople (Istanbul) - encouraging!

Stats Dist 86 Km, Average 18km/hr, Max 50km/hr, Climb 630
