Sailing with the commonwealth
News from the Big Cog

Day 54 Brindisi/Petras - 21.9.05

The Ferry ride across the Ionian Sea was memorable with a good Commonwealth representation - 3 new Zealand girls, 2 South African girls, 2 canadian girls, a lady from Britain and we 2 Australians. We were joined by a very well travelled young guy from Greece who is really Frence named Manu. When the Italian wine ran out, we went to the duty free shop and bought better, cheaper Greek wine. We sung, talked into the night and then slept on the floors or tristed on chairs on the cold upper deck.

We landed in Petras and were excited to put our watches forward. We had finally crossed a time zone! It took 4,000 km! With only a short day to ride we set of on the new French built bridge (4 years old) to Nafpaktos, ate some really rich cakes and after a flash rain, enjoyed a spectacular ride along the Korinthian Gulf.

The road was better than I expected and gave us views of mountains, villages, fish farms in small inlets and deep blue waters. One of our better rides. Our first night in Greece at the beach town of Itea, meant sampling souvlakis at 2 places and Ice Cream chasers. The price of everything is lower here, the food and wine is good, and most people speak English. This could be fun.

Stats Dist 110 Km, Average 21km/hr, Max 58km/hr, Climb 875
