Island Hopping - Croatia Style! News from the Big Cog
Day 40 Rijek - 7.9.05
We set off early by our standards (10.00 AM) and rode along a busy road with a sheer drop to our right and lots of trucks and buses cutting it close. After 20 Km of this fun, we took the turn off to Krk and came to a long high toll bridge onto the island. The guard just waved us on and we crossed by the pedestrian path.
We searched everywhere but the island seemed to have no vowels so we pressed on. Like the rest of Croatia the Island had hills and rocks and we climbed and descended many times. We would come round a corner and see a small village in and inlet with sail boats moored outside a cluster of stone houses with terracotta roofs.
Little havens amongst the rocks, the place had a desert feel and we saw many dead snakes on the road. After 45Km we reached the end of the island and at Bask took a ferry to the next island of Rab. This Island had a vowel but still only 3 letters. During the ferry ride we were treated to a show from about a dozen dolphins leaping out of the water and generally having a good time.

We rode across the flatter island and took a short ferry ride to the mainland at Jablanca where we met cyclists Bob and Terry from Colorado whom we had met them 2 days earlier at Rijeka. We shared a great meal, a wide ranging conversation and adjacent lodgings. The smooth local red ensured a good nights sleep.
Stats Dist 98 Km, Average 15km/hr, Max 52km/hr, Climb 1345m (record!)
